STUDIO Piet Nieder is committed to build a livable future. For us and generations to come. Humans and other species alike. Another economy freed from its dependency on fossil fuels is under way. The production of adequate spaces is crucial to make this change possible. Finding the potentials for individual as well as urban life is a challenging yet inspiring task. The solution is not technical or scientific or poetic - its all of it at the same time.

STUDIO Piet Nieder is dedicated to accelerate this transformation by fostering pilot projects, strengthening networks and conducting research!

A lot can be learned by studying traditional solutions: the vernacular.

The inherent principles of vernacular building has been developed throughout centuries by experiment, failure and evolution. It has always been a rational and problem solving approach to build space and facilitate social life. It has lasted for all times of human existence. It has given comfort, shelter and cultural pride to their communities without the use of a single drop of fossil fuels. Social, cultural, functional and esthetic needs were achieved by the usage of local resources and specific knowledge, much of which is being lost by an (over-)industrialized and globalized economy. Regaining the understanding of the inherent complexity of vernacular architecture is crucial to design the post-fossil spaces we will inhabit - in the best imaginable future.
